June 8 Saturday Lagos

  • I'm up 7:30

  • All sleeping

  • Check ATM withdrawal rates

  • If I did my calculation right, the first one with no fee and the MultiBank rate, I paid $1.239 for each euro. The second time with a fee and unknown rate I paid either $1.138 or $1.146 depending on whether the fee is already included. Either way that wins. I think I've got it. Doesn't sound like much but I think it would have cost me $60 more on $600 so 10% loss! Take that to the bank. Or did the general Euro to Dollar exchange rate change between withdrawals?

  • Start the day with laundry

  • Can't figure out machine

  • Look up on Google

  • Try the right hand buttons for Ernie's clothes to wash in 15 minutes, cold water, gentle spin

  • Repeat again for his second load

  • Repeat again for Shaina, Mo and Sherrie's clothing

  • After 60 minutes realize it didn't stop in 15 minutes and feels very hot

  • Somehow force stop after much screaming and yelling at no one in particular

  • Pray all the handwash, cold water items are still items

  • Pull out soapy clothes

  • Rinse clothes in bathtub, ring out, hang to dry hoping no damage done

  • P.S. Hand ringing out is nothing like a spin cycle

  • Shaina and Mo take off on their own today - interested in a beach day

  • I think it is much to windy and cold for that, but I live in Florida not St Louis

  • Walk aimlessly thru old town squares, narrow alleys, stone patterned streets

  • Pass Slave Market, supposedly the first place Portugal sold African slaves in 1444, associated with Henry the Navigator

  • End up at top of Praia da Batata as in we are looking down, way down at the beach

  • Stop at Tsunami Recon Point sign above (that's encouraging, at least they have one, although by the time I could climb up, not sure it would help)

  • Walk down many, many steps to the beach

  • The beach is surrounded by cliff/rock formations

  • Some dividing the beaches, some in the water

  • Walk thru cuts/tunnels/arches between beach areas

  • If tide comes in don't plan on staying dry or getting to the next set of steps up

  • Tide is semi low, we survive

  • Wander back across the street in search of lunch

  • Fine restaurant Millenium, perfect table outside for people watching

  • Enjoy avocado and shrimp

  • Ernie orders a Super Bock

  • Largest Super Bock ever (now we know to specify size)

  • Back to very cute Cafe Goldig (we saw it earlier) for my coffee

  • Caters to vegan

  • Pass on offer of vegan oat milk, maybe tomorrow, today cow

  • Don't pass on vegan chocolate cake

  • Eventually it is time for to eat again

  • On recommendation of friend Ronen, used to live here, we eat at Calhou

  • Owned by his friends Silvino and Cristina

  • Good thing we had made reservation (very popular)

  • We eat: Black pig which definitely speaks cow, Cataplana tradicio peixe (traditional fish based stew), Dourada grelhada (grilled bream) and Green wine
Finish off with coffee mousse which I have to share 3 ways (boohoo)

  • Then complimentary Cherry Schnapps, with honey (Ginjinha I think)

  • Shaina pours it into micro-cups and she is very stingy

  • We are fat and happy, thanks Ronen
